YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN
Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Youth Services Librarian is responsible for the development of library programs and services to children and young adults including reference, reader’s advisory, programming, and collection development; works with Director and staff to monitor and evaluate services to youth; promotes and publicizes the youth services program in the schools and the community.
Work is conducted primarily in an office/library setting. It includes pressure generated by frequent telephone and on-site customer service requests, computer assistance, on-site and off-site programs, interruptions, deadlines, maintaining decorum in a diplomatic manner, effectively dealing with program enrollment and time limits, and resolution of disputed charges. Conditions include regular reference desk hours, regular evening and weekend duties, and responsibility for the library during a shift.
Work may include prolonged sitting, as well as moderate lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, pulling and pushing activities, manual dexterity, clear speech and visual hearing acuity.
This classification specializes in youth services and will be responsible for the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of youth services programs and activities, and the day-to-day operation of the library’s youth services area. . Maintains regular communications with schools, caregivers, social agencies, child care agencies, parents, and other interested community groups. This classification also provides reference, reader’s advisory services, collection management and programming for children and
their parents/caregivers, as well providing general reference service to adults as required. This classification works closely with the Library Director and appropriate staff members to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate services for youth.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Advise the Library Director in development of policies relating to youth services.
· Direct the work and training of support personnel assigned to youth services.
· Monitor and evaluate collections and select and withdraw materials for Youth
· Services collections utilizing appropriate library selection and collection
· Participate and interact with local, regional, and statewide youth services agencies (regional system, state library, and professional organizations).
· Establish a good working relationship between the Library and local schools to
complement and supplement their programs and to promote and encourage the
use of the public library
· Develop ideas and assist in the preparation of proposals for grant funds; support
· Arrange and present library tours and programs for children, parents/caregivers,
teachers, and other child care providers.
· Develop and deliver story hours, activities, and themed seasonal reading program activities for children and care givers.
· Prepare and collect statistics, surveys, and reports which measure and evaluate
usage of the Library’s youth collections, programs, and goals attainment
· Assist the Library Director in assessment of budgetary, personnel, and equipment needs of library’s youth services areas
· Attend local and professional meetings and seminars related to youth services
· Work at library reference desk to provide reference services to all library patrons
· Work at library circulation desk as required, and perform all duties associated
with the circulation of materials, payment of fines/fees, handling of reserves, and
registration of borrowers.
· Responsibility for operation of the library on assigned evenings and weekends.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
· Broad knowledge of books, literature, and audiovisual materials for youth
including knowledge of reader interest levels.
· Ability to create programs and services for youth to meet the changing needs of
the service area.
· Knowledge of modern theories of child development.
· Knowledge of effective employee relations and team leadership techniques.
· Knowledge of current education/library personnel and training techniques.
· Knowledge of community needs assessment methods.
· Knowledge of the kinds of community resources and types of agencies serving
· Ability to develop positive library/community relationships.
· Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, direct, and evaluate quality library
services and programs for youth.
· Demonstrated ability to conduct a variety of youth programs including story
reading sessions, story-telling, and group activities.
· Demonstrate a high interest in and have extensive experience working with youth and their families.
· Ability to communicate and work effectively with all levels of library personnel
to ensure quality services.
· Ability to communicate effectively in English.
· Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and share workloads.
· Ability to plan short-term and on-going projects and programs and to direct
activities of support personnel.
· Demonstrate the ability at all times to work on a multi-task oriented basis.
· Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes days, evening, weekends, and
· Ability to serve as acting-Library Director for limited time periods, and serve as a
responsible spokesperson for the library, when designated.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s Degree in Library Science or equivalent degree from a graduate library program accredited by the American Library Association is highly preferred. Professional library experience, preferably in a children’s or young adult’s librarian role, in a public library is preferred.
Knowledge and Experience:
· Working knowledge of services to children and young adults in public
· Working knowledge of collection development and selection of library
materials for children and young adults
· Working knowledge of library procedures and practices including basic
features of an integrated library system (on-line public access catalog, on-line
databases, interlibrary loan, reserve, renewals, and holds).
· Two years of increasingly responsible paid professional public library
experience over the past five years
· Demonstrated knowledge of children’s literature, storytelling, children’s
programming and group activities.
· Possession of a valid Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record
as a condition of initial and continued employment.
· Ability to satisfactorily pass an FBI background check.
